Hamble Station opened 18 January 1942. The station is close to the village of Hamble-le-Rice. The village and the River Hamble were featured in the BBC television series Howards’ Way which was first broadcast in the 1980’s.

The station is also situated close to what was the Hamble aerodrome. There is an unused siding/goods line from the station to what was the Admiralty Acceptance Depot, which is now part of the British Petroleum Storage Depot. At one point the airfield had the peculiarity of a railway level crossing bisecting a taxiway!
