The Great Western Railway’s terminus station called ‘Salisbury (Fisherton)’ - built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel - opened in 1856. This was demolished and a South West Trains maintenance depot now stands on the site. The present day Salisbury station opened in 1859 and its elegant facade is now a Grade II listed building.

The ‘Market House’ branch line once ran for a quarter of a mile from the eastern end of the station to terminate at what is now known as the Corn Exchange in the centre of the city.
